Rokkoyo Tansu - Taste the Pure Sensation of Natural Coffee

Rokkoyo Tansu - Taste the Pure Sensation of Natural Coffee

Rokkoyo is a collective term for Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns that have been producing pottery since the medieval times. The term was coined by a historic ceramics scholar, Fujio Koyama, in 1948, and the Six Ancient Kilns were designated as Japan Heritage Sites in 2017. Rokkoyo is made in one of them.

Rokkoyo Tansu introduces a new way to enjoy your daily brew, following the beloved Rokkoyo Kyusu of 2024. Designed for coffee lovers who appreciate a cleaner, lighter-bodied cup, this version features an all-ceramic filter—ideal for light to medium roasts—delivering a smoother mouthfeel and refined clarity in every sip. Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese tansu cabinetry, we’ve thoughtfully reimagined the set’s design: the cup and filter now nest perfectly inside the main kyusu. It’s a compact, elegant solution that honors both heritage and the needs of modern living.

This is our second ROKKOYO campaign. We hope Rokkoyo Tansu can bring you another brewing experience to enjoy your daily coffee.

Drawing inspiration from the timeless elegance of traditional Japanese Tansu Cabinetry, we’ve reimagined the structure of the Rokkoyo set with both form and function in mind. Just as Tansu chests were designed to be space-efficient yet beautiful—often doubling as storage and furniture—this new configuration allows the ceramic filter and cup to nest seamlessly within the main kyusu. The lid can easily be flipped over to serve as a receptacle for the ceramic filter.

The result is a harmonious, all-in-one design that showcases the precision of Japanese craftsmanship. It enhances portability and storage while aligning with modern lifestyles, where space is limited and simplicity is valued. This refined compactness adds a sense of calm and order to your coffee ritual, whether at home or in a small urban kitchen.

To filter out unwanted coffee ground, a paper filter or metal mesh is usually used. However, these solutions are not perfect. Rokkoyo Tansu features a Porous Ceramic Filter, a paperless design that permits a controlled amount of coffee oils to flow through, resulting in a clean, smooth, and medium-bodied cup that accentuates the natural sweetness of the beans.

Crafted from unique clay sourced from Tokoname, renowned for its natural porosity, our filter is flavor-neutral, robust, and reusable, making it an environmentally conscious choice that can endure a lifetime with proper maintenance. The fine pores not only enhance the pouring process but also reduce bitterness and other unwanted tastes, elevating your coffee experience.

Using Rokkoyo enhances sweetness and richness while preserving the coffee's original flavor. Rokkoyo ensures that the full flavor, richness, and taste of the coffee beans are preserved. The Pour-Over method, even highlights the bean’s natural flavors, especially for delicate, floral, or fruity notes in light roasts. Our barista recommended using light to medium roast beans, such as Cinnamon Roast and American Roast, for best quality.

1. Add Coffee Grounds
Use a medium to coarse grind to preserve natural oils and prevent clogging. Measure 15g of coffee grounds for one cup.

2. Bloom the Coffee
Pour just enough hot water to soak all the grounds evenly. Wait 30 seconds to let the coffee bloom and release gas.

3. Drip the Coffee
Slowly pour the remaining hot water in 2–3 rounds using circular motions, starting small and ending wide. Pause slightly between pours and let it drip for 2–3 minutes. Fresh coffee will foam as you pour!

The "chara-kake" technique  (チャラ掛け) in Japanese ceramics, involves applying a thin layer of slip to pottery surfaces, creating unique decorations. This method enhances luster and color without compromising texture, maintaining the pottery's durability and beauty.

Tokoname clay is crushed into fine pieces and transformed into a liquid glaze. By skillfully controlling the application and scraping of the slip, intricate patterns emerge, adding visual interest and a tactile experience for users. This traditional process, requiring precision and expertise, results in teapots with a striking textural contrast, making each piece visually appealing and culturally significant.

Rokkoyo Tansu weighs only 428g/15oz, enhancing its portability. When paired with a carrying case, you can securely transport it on the go.

Rokkoyo Carry Bag is made from EVA foam composite with soft inner lining. That's the perfect protector for your Rokkoyo Tansu.

Compared to coffee makers and other brewing equipment, our ceramic filter is very easy to clean after use. It is suitable for daily use as all you need to do is remove the coffee grounds and wash it with water afterwards.

Like our previous product, Rokkoyo Tansu is designed, produced and shipped with great concern for sustainability. All our products are crafted in Tokoname, Aichi using a traditional process that is regulated by Japan’s comprehensive environmental law. Keeping waste and pollution to the minimum, the completed pots are then packed into recyclable packaging and then shipped out. Our boxes are strong enough to protect the product but without excess decorative design.

To filter the coffee grounds, a reusable ceramic funnel replaces disposable paper coffee filters. In Japan, paper was traditionally a precious resource that wasn’t disposed of after one-time use. The decision to change the filter follows this philosophy. Simply rinse it with hot water or place the filter near a fire in case it has been jammed after years of use. With good care, Rokkoyo can be passed down for the next generation.
